ARMOUR OF GOD | Amy Warnica
In Ephesians 6, Paul tells us to take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Notice the word “stand”. We are not instructed to suit up and run into battle, Paul is saying to stand firm and don’t let the enemy intimidate you to run or step back. This means whenever things like depression or anxiety, insecurity, or loneliness come at us, we have the armour given to us by God to stay protected and stand our ground.
Everything that is in the armour of God is what Jesus won for us on the cross, Paul is pretty much saying: stand in everything that Jesus did for you on the cross and the enemy can’t touch you.
Since I was young, I have prayed the armour of God over myself daily. Sometimes I even do actions that help me visualise what each piece will help me with.
I first put on my helmet of salvation. I know that because Jesus Christ is my salvation my thoughts can be protected. By focusing on the reality that Jesus has won my battle for me it helps my thoughts remain steady in times of attack.
I then put on my breastplate of righteousness. This protects my heart. Scripture says that all things flow from the heart. My desires, my words, my actions all need protection from battle. The breastplate of righteousness means to follow Jesus, His commands, and teachings, so that I stay right standing before him.
Next is the belt of truth! This is firmly fastened to my waist; I imagine this anchors me. To keep myself grounded, I need to know the Truth, the Word of God. The more I know my Bible, the more I can weed out the many different truths that fill our society today.
The shoes fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. Like other types of shoes these protect my feet from the path I walk on. I know that no matter where I go in my day, I am protected by peace that comes from the Gospel.
Next is the sword of the Spirit! Notice how this is the only piece of armour that is the weapon. The Spirit is the one who can defeat the enemy. The sword is also the Word of God, knowing our Bible is so important, we use the Bible like a sword against the enemy. So when he comes against you, just strike back with a scripture.
Lastly, the shield of faith. My hope and trust in the Lord in times of trouble becomes my shield that will protect me from every flaming arrow of the enemy.
Knowing that you are suited in the armour of God helps you to be strong and to stand no matter what the enemy tries in your life. Just like a soldier, you are strong, protected and have weapons to fight the enemy.
