RISK IT FOR THE BISCUIT | Lou Cregan

The miracles of Jesus are nothing short of amazing–they’re miracles! There is a phrase ‘risk it for the biscuit’ that means that you have to be willing to risk something to get something better–and that’s exactly what we see in Luke 8:43-48. It’s the story of a woman who had the issue of blood. In the culture back then, this meant that she was unclean, and because she was unclean, she was treated badly, pushed to the edges of society and she couldn’t go about her life like everyone else–until she heard about Jesus!

Now, in the story, Jesus is already on His way to see a girl who is dying, but as He is on His way, He stops when she touches Him and says ‘Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me’. I love that. In a moment where people are pressing up against Jesus, He still notices when someone reaches out in faith. In that moment, she was instantly healed. The sheer faith in that moment of a woman who is unclean to touch someone as famous as Jesus is crazy! She puts off social rules for the presence of God.

Jesus had every right to embarrass her back to where culture said she belonged, but instead, He took the moment to honour her faith. What would you do, if this was you? Could you risk it for the biscuit?

WHERE IS YOUR FAITH?

The Gospels follow Jesus as He makes His way to the Cross, and the disciples have a front-row seat to all of Jesus’ miracles. We read again in Luke 8 when they are crossing the lake that a storm comes in. There is thunder, lightning, water is splashing around the boat, and it’s pouring. The disciples are freaking out, and Jesus is casually asleep. Even though they’d been with Him, it’s fascinating that they still woke up Jesus. Do you think ‘Where is your faith?’ is a good response from Jesus? Before you answer, think about this when you read through Luke 7 to 9. We see Jesus teaching the disciples step by step, yet still they had fear when the storm rolled through on the boat. At the same time, we also see people who simply hear about Jesus and came in faith for their miracle.
